However, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), our nation’s special education law, is less well known to families. Since its inception in 1975, nearly a half-century ago, under the title Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA), Public Law 94-142, the Act has undergone several revisions in pursuit of remaining true to the original intent of providing appropriate public education to children with disabilities at no cost to parents. Periodic revision and update serve to increase precision, efficiency and effectiveness of the law, as the ideals governing it are generalized into practice.
